Death Cab for Cutie est un groupe de rock américain formé à Bellingham, dans l'État de Washington, en 1997. Le groupe se compose du frontman Ben Gibbard (chant, guitare, piano), de Nick Harmer (basse), de Dave Depper (guitare, claviers, chant), de Zac Rae (claviers, guitare) et de Jason McGerr (batterie). Le groupe était à l'origine un projet solo de Ben Gibbard, qui a ensuite décidé d'étendre le projet pour en faire un groupe complet. En 2014, le guitariste fondateur et producteur Chris Walla a annoncé qu'il quittait le groupe après l'enregistrement de leur huitième album studio, Kintsugi. Le frontman Ben Gibbard a emprunté le nom du groupe au titre de la chanson écrite par Neil Innes et Vivian Stanshall et interprétée par leur groupe, le Bonzo Dog Doo Dah Band, dans le film des Beatles de 1967, Magical Mystery Tour. Le nom de cette chanson était à son tour tiré d'un magazine policier de pulp fiction inventé par Richard Hoggart dans le cadre de son étude de 1957 sur la culture de la classe ouvrière, The Uses of Literacy. Dans une interview de 2011, Gibbard a déclaré : "Le nom n'a jamais été censé être quelque chose que quelqu'un allait référencer 15 ans plus tard.
