Coldplay est un groupe de rock britannique, formé en 1997 par Chris Martin (chant, guitare, piano), Jonny Buckland (guitare) et Guy Berryman (basse), camarades de classe de l'University College London, ainsi que par le batteur Will Champion. Le nom du groupe vient de Tim Crompton, un étudiant qui fréquentait la même université que les membres (University College London) à l'époque. Once they issued their debut, Parachutes in 2000, many saw them as a Radiohead knock-off. No doubt, Coldplay’s sound —elegant, melodic, vaguely spacey and very dramatic — bore plenty of similarity to mid-1990s Radiohead. But the group’s hooks, sharpened by frontman Chris Martin’s ability to pull heartstrings, and the their willingness to evolve their sound, gave Coldplay staying power. The greatest examples are second album A Rush of Blood to the Head (2002), which was generally considered to be musically and lyrically more mature and sophisticated, and less obviously the product of one particular influence, and the fourth one Viva La Vida or Death and All His Friends (2008), where producer Brian Eno influenced the band to broaden their sound and led to various sonic landscapes. Both won the Grammy Award for Best Rock Album and spawned sucessful singles such as “Clocks”, “Viva la Vida”, “In My Place”, “Violet Hill” and “The Scientist”. En conséquence, le groupe est devenu l'un des plus grands succès commerciaux du nouveau millénaire, avec plus de 80 millions d'albums vendus - même si cette reconnaissance s'est accompagnée d'une opposition vocale, due à la nature soi-disant dérivée du groupe, à ses paroles trop émotives et au fait qu'il s'agit de garçons anglais bien élevés plutôt que de rockstars sauvages. En conséquence, Coldplay est considéré soit comme une caricature de tout ce qui ne va pas dans le rock du 21e siècle, soit comme un très bon groupe, même s'il est surjoué, dont les chansons sont faites pour les stades.
