Procol Harum s'est formé en Angleterre en 1967. Le noyau dur du groupe pendant les premières années les plus marquantes, de 1967 à 1970, était composé du chanteur Gary Brooker au chant et au piano, de B.J. Wilson à la batterie, de Matthew Fisher à l'orgue, de Robin Thrower à la guitare, de Dave Knights à la basse et du parolier Keith Reid. La contribution de l'organiste Fisher est particulièrement importante sur le plus grand succès du groupe, "A Whiter Shade of Pale". Après cette première période, le groupe a connu un certain nombre de changements, ainsi qu'un long hiatus, le frontman Brooker restant le seul membre constant.
