Gerry and the Pacemakers était un groupe de beat anglais très en vue sur la scène du Merseybeat des années 1960. Gerry Marsden forme le groupe en 1959 avec son frère Fred, Les Chadwick et Arthur McMahon. Ils rivalisent avec les Beatles au début de leur carrière, jouant dans les mêmes quartiers de Hambourg, d'Allemagne et de Liverpool. McMahon (connu sous le nom d'Arthur Mack) est remplacé au piano par Les Maguire vers 1961. Comme les Beatles, ils venaient de Liverpool, étaient gérés par Brian Epstein et ont été enregistrés par George Martin. Le groupe est le deuxième à signer avec Brian Epstein, qui les signera plus tard avec Columbia Records. On se souvient surtout d'eux pour avoir été le premier groupe à atteindre la première place du UK Singles Chart avec leurs trois premiers singles : "How Do You Do It ?", "I Like It" et "You'll Never Walk Alone". Le groupe a manqué de peu un quatrième numéro un consécutif lorsque "I'm the One" a été écarté de la première place pendant deux semaines en février 1964 par le "Needles and Pins" de The Searchers, un groupe de Liverpudliens. Une autre de leurs chansons les plus célèbres, "Ferry Cross the Mersey", fait référence à la rivière Mersey qui coule à Liverpool.
